What are the missions of a graphic designer?

When we stop to observe around us, we quickly realize that graphic communication is everywhere: on food packaging, magazine covers, advertising posters, product labels … It is also found online, with websites and mobile applications, among others. Behind all of this, there is a graphic designer. The latter’s mission is to find the most effective and clear way to communicate an idea, while keeping the whole thing visually appealing.

What does the graphic designer do?

The tasks of the graphic designer are varied. Depending on his job and his preferences, the graphic designer can choose his field of expertise. He can work on the graphic chart of companies, which means developing their visual identity: their logo, colors, typography, etc. He can also work on advertising projects (such as posters, flyers and signs), on packaging or on publishing work (newspapers, books, magazines, etc.). The graphic designer is also called upon to work on television and multimedia projects (for example: for television shows, music videos, video games and websites).

Usually, when starting a new project, the graphic designer meets with his client to analyze his needs. Following the consultation, the graphic designer seeks the best solution for his client by developing concepts. He can then make suggestions, often presented using sketches and models. Once the concept is approved by the client, the graphic designer can continue the work and create the final version.

Qualities and aptitudes

“I can’t become a graphic designer because I am not good enough at drawing”…False! In the course of his work, the graphic designer is not considered to be an artist. Communication is the key to his work. While having drawing skills is an asset in this profession, it is not essential. However, you need to have a good sense of aesthetics in order to create compelling visuals.

In order to develop interesting and innovative concepts, creativity is important for a graphic designer. It is a skill that can develop over time and some ideation techniques can also fuel it. These techniques can help to come up with a concept for a project.

As graphic designers are called upon to work in collaboration with their fellow designers and also, sometimes, with other workers in the graphic chain, teamwork is a valuable quality to have. In addition, graphic designers are also called upon to work on several projects at the same time, often with tight deadlines. It is therefore essential to have a good sense of organization and perseverance in order to bring projects to fruition.

Finally, having a good opening for criticism is important. It is an integral part of the work of a graphic designer, whether it comes from his client, his boss or his co-workers.

Training

There are different avenues to become a graphic designer. Some take a college course in graphic design, which allows them to obtain a college diploma (DEC) or an attestation of collegial studies (AEC). Some go to university instead, with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Others will also combine college and university, by pursuing a bachelor’s degree after graduating from college in graphic design.

It is also possible to continue with continuing education, which is invaluable for improving one’s skills or for staying up to date with constantly evolving softwares. For example, it is very relevant for graphic designers to follow training courses covering Adobe suite softwares, which are very important in the field. At Doussou Formation, we offer training on some of the most used software in graphic design: InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. As for web design, we offer Adobe XD (UX / UI Design) training.

In the job market

There are many potential employers of graphic designers. For example, they can work in publishing houses, advertising agencies, graphic design studios and printing houses. As graphic design is everywhere, there are a multitude of companies, offering different services, in which graphic designers can work. However, others prefer to turn to freelance, as a self-employed worker.
